I’m not a huge fan of fighting games. They are fun from time to time, but to me, they seem to have a low replay value. I mean, one can only beat up the other person for so long. Although I find fighting games to be a bit repetitive and sometimes boring, I am always up for playing one. And last night, I was introduced to a game called “Guilty Gear X2 Reload.”
Now, for someone who doesn’t fancy fighting games, “Guilty Gear” impressed the hell out of me. So what makes “Guilty Gear” unlike any other fighter? Well, first off, the cast of characters is awesome. Each fighter is different, and I mean DIFFERENT. “Faust” is this tall lanky guy who looks like he has a paper bag on his head, “Potemkin” is a huge guy jewelry, and “I-No” is a girl who can’t stop rocking (or hitting people with) her guitar. It is normal for a fighting game to have different types of fighters, but I have never seen such a diverse roster with such delightful and sometimes funny characters.
The animation and art style is also pretty cool. It’s animated like an anime with lots of trippy flashing and whacky animation. Every character in the game has their own unique weapon and fighting style which are cooly animated as such. And while you kick ass with your special character and their special weapon, do it while listening to metal. Yes, that’s right, all the anime violence is set to the backdrop of raging guitars. How cool!
I have no idea why “Guilty Gear x2 Reload” is called “Guilty Gear,” or why it says “Heaven or Hell” before every match, but I do know that “Guilty Gear” is bad-to-the-ass and should not be missed. It is such a great gaming experience, that I contemplated buying it while I was playing it, and I never want to buy anything! If a fighting game makes me shell out bucks, you know it’s good. “Guilty Gear” is not played by many people, which is rather unfortunate, and I say: Don’t be one of those people. Play “Guilty Gear.”
